We’ve all done it. Picked up a body lotion, opened the lid, had a good sniff and decided whether we liked it or not.
And while there’s absolutely nothing wrong with wanting your skincare to smell beautiful, there’s a lot more to a good body lotion than its fragrance.
Your skin is your body’s largest organ, and the products you apply to it every day deserve a little consideration.
So, what should you actually look for when choosing a body lotion? And how do you know whether it’s doing more than simply making your skin feel soft for a few minutes?
Let’s unpack it.
1. What Does a Good Body Lotion Actually Do?
At its most basic, a body lotion should help your skin retain moisture and feel comfortable.
But a thoughtfully formulated lotion can do more than provide that immediate feeling of softness.
A good body lotion should:
- Hydrate: Help increase water content in the outer layers of your skin.
- Moisturise: Reduce moisture loss and help keep your skin soft.
- Support your skin barrier: Help maintain the protective outer layer of your skin.
- Condition: Improve the way dry or rough skin feels.
- Feel good to use: Absorb comfortably without leaving an unpleasant sticky or greasy residue.
And here’s something worth remembering: a lotion doesn’t need to be expensive, heavily fragranced or packed with trendy ingredients to work well.
It’s the formulation as a whole that matters.
2. Which Ingredients Should You Look for in a Body Lotion?
This is where things get interesting.
When you turn a bottle around and look at the ingredient list, you’ll often find unfamiliar names. But understanding a few key ingredient categories can help you make better choices.
Humectants: Ingredients That Attract Water
Humectants help attract and retain water in the outer layers of the skin.
Some common examples include glycerin, hyaluronic acid and urea.
They’re particularly useful for skin that feels dehydrated, tight or uncomfortable.
Our Bush Wellness Body Lotion contains hydroxyethyl urea, a humectant that helps support skin hydration.
It’s one of those ingredients that might not sound particularly exciting, but it can make a meaningful difference to how moisturised your skin feels.
Emollients: Ingredients That Soften and Smooth
Emollients help soften the skin and improve its texture.
This is where botanical oils and butters really shine.
Some of our favourite ingredients include:
Mafura Butter
A beautiful African botanical ingredient, mafura butter is rich in skin-conditioning lipids that help soften and nourish dry skin.
Marula Oil
Marula oil contains fatty acids that help condition the skin, leaving it feeling softer and smoother.
Baobab Oil
Rich in fatty acids, baobab oil is particularly useful in formulations designed to nourish dry skin and support the skin’s moisture barrier.
Kalahari Melon Seed Oil
A lightweight botanical oil containing linoleic acid, which contributes to its skin-conditioning properties.
Shea Butter
A familiar favourite for good reason. Shea butter is an excellent emollient that helps soften dry, rough skin.
You’ll find a selection of these beautiful African botanicals in our Bush Wellness Body Lotion.
Occlusives: Ingredients That Help Keep Moisture In
While humectants help hydrate the skin, occlusive ingredients help reduce the amount of water escaping from it. Think of them as helping to seal in moisture. Plant oils, butters, petrolatum and certain waxes can all contribute to this function, although their effectiveness varies. The most effective moisturisers often combine humectants, emollients and occlusive ingredients rather than relying on just one category.
It’s not about finding one miracle ingredient. It’s about choosing a formulation where the ingredients work well together.

3. Is a Natural Body Lotion Automatically Better for Your Skin?
Not necessarily. and I think this is an important conversation to have. Just because an ingredient is natural doesn’t automatically mean it’s better, safer or more effective. And similarly, just because an ingredient has a scientific-sounding name doesn’t mean it’s something you should avoid. At Bush Wellness, we’re passionate about botanical ingredients, particularly the incredible plant oils and butters available here in Africa. But we’re equally passionate about thoughtful formulation. We believe in combining ingredients based on what they contribute to the finished product, rather than simply because they’re fashionable or look good on a label.
The goal is to create skincare that works with your skin, not against it.
4. Should You Avoid Fragrance in Body Lotion?
This is where things become a little more personal.
Fragrance isn’t automatically bad, and there’s something lovely about a body lotion that turns an everyday routine into a sensory experience. But fragrance also isn’t what makes a moisturiser effective. Some fragrance ingredients, including certain essential oils, can cause irritation or allergic reactions in susceptible people. If you have eczema, very sensitive skin or a known fragrance allergy, a fragrance-free lotion is often the better choice. For everyone else, it comes down to understanding your skin and choosing products that suit it.
Our Bush Wellness Body Lotion incorporates aromatic botanicals including neroli and jasmine, contributing to its beautiful sensory experience. But the essential oil blend is only one part of the formulation. The nourishing oils, butters and hydrating ingredients are what provide its moisturising benefits.
A beautiful scent should be a bonus, not the reason a lotion works.
5. Why Does My Skin Still Feel Dry After Applying Lotion?
Have you ever applied body lotion, only to find your skin feels dry again a few hours later? There are several possible reasons. Your lotion may not provide enough moisture-retaining ingredients for your skin’s needs, particularly if your skin is naturally very dry. You may also be losing moisture through a compromised skin barrier, using harsh cleansers, showering in very hot water or living in a dry climate. And sometimes, it’s simply about how you’re applying your products.
One of my favourite tips is to apply your body lotion shortly after showering, while your skin is still slightly damp. This helps retain some of that moisture and gives your lotion a great starting point. If your skin is particularly dry, layering a suitable body oil over your lotion can provide additional emollient support.
6. Is Body Lotion or Body Oil Better?
This is another question we hear often, and the answer is that they serve slightly different purposes. Most body lotions are water-based emulsions containing a combination of hydrating and moisturising ingredients. Body oils, on the other hand, are generally water-free and work primarily by softening and conditioning the skin while helping reduce moisture loss. For many people, a good body lotion is more than enough for daily use. But if your skin is particularly dry, using both can be a lovely combination. Apply your lotion first, followed by a few drops of body oil where you need extra nourishment. Our Bush Body Lotion and Tissue Oil complement each other beautifully in this kind of routine.
7. How Often Should You Apply Body Lotion?
For most people, once a day is a good starting point. If your skin is particularly dry, you may benefit from applying it twice daily or whenever your skin feels uncomfortable. Pay extra attention to areas that tend to become dry, such as your elbows, knees, shins and feet. Consistency matters far more than having an elaborate routine. A simple moisturising habit after your daily shower can make a real difference to how your skin feels over time.
8. How Do You Know If a Body Lotion Is Right for You?
There isn’t one perfect lotion for everyone. Your skin type, climate, personal preferences and any existing skin conditions all influence what will work best. But here are a few things worth paying attention to:
- Does your skin feel comfortable and moisturised several hours after applying it?
- Does it absorb well without leaving an unpleasant residue?
- Does it contain ingredients suited to your skin’s needs?
- Can you use it consistently without irritation?
- Does it leave your skin feeling softer and smoother over time?
If the answer is yes, you’ve probably found a good match. And remember, if a product causes persistent stinging, itching, redness or irritation, stop using it and consider speaking to a healthcare professional.
A Little More About Our Bush Wellness Body Lotion
When we developed our Body Lotion, the goal wasn’t simply to create something that smelled beautiful. We wanted a formulation that felt luxurious to use while delivering meaningful moisturising benefits. Our blend brings together ingredients such as mafura butter, marula oil, baobab oil, Kalahari melon seed oil, shea butter, squalane and carefully selected botanical extracts. Each contributes something different to the overall formulation, from helping soften dry skin to supporting a comfortable, moisturised skin feel.
And yes, we wanted it to smell beautiful too. Because caring for your skin should be effective, but it can also be something you genuinely look forward to.
The Bottom Line: What Makes a Good Body Lotion?
A good body lotion should do more than smell nice or make your skin feel temporarily silky. Look for a balanced formulation containing ingredients that hydrate, soften and help reduce moisture loss. Pay attention to how your skin responds, choose products suited to your needs, and don’t feel pressured to follow every new skincare trend. At Bush Wellness, we believe that looking after your skin doesn’t need to be complicated.
Good ingredients. Thoughtful formulation. Consistent care.
Sometimes, that’s all your skin really needs.
